The dominion over earth: grace recalling to the gift
Dominion
It is not an absolute dominion over other creatures, because the earth belongs to Lord with all that is within it: the mandate is to cultivate and care the garden of the world.
Cultivation is a job and the caring involves a responsible and temporary service; man can take from the bounty of the earth whatever is needed for subsistence, but the fruitfulness has to be ensured for coming generations.
This recalls the gift and responsibility in the giving of life through procreation by man and woman in marriage, because “it is not good for the man to be alone” (Gen 2:18) and God created us as male and female, blessed for procreation by becoming one body.
