The unique and unrepeatable value of human life cannot be dismissed without betraying the very cause of man, who receives it in use and is not its owner, but administrator.
In fact, God alone is the Lord of life, whom He will demand an accounting for.
The divine provenance of life makes it unavailable, untouchable, sacred.
Man’s soul and body belong to God; the command “you shall not kill” (Exo 20:13) is strengthened by the promise of justice for the life of the innocent and the just, without acquittal for the wicked.
The watchman is gravely responsible altogether to whom, although not in command, knows but neglects to blame and correct.
